Calling all mini ‘Rock Stars’!

June 11, 2025

Primary school children aged 5-11 across Mountsorrel, Quorn, and the surrounding villages are being invited to take part in a brand-new competition launched by Tarmac’s Mountsorrel Quarry – aimed at inspiring creativity while helping young people to have fun and discover the rich geological heritage of their local area at the same time.

The Rock Stars: Mountsorrel Quarry Schools Competition 2025 encourages children aged 5 to 11 to explore the story of the Quarry’s world-famous pink granite through imaginative entries – from drawings and poems to sculptures or short stories.

The competition, which runs until 7 July 2025, aims to build a sense of pride in the local area and help young pupils learn more about how the pink granite beneath their feet has helped build everything from roads and railways to schools, racetracks and stadiums across the UK.

The winning prize is a family ticket to a day at the Silverstone Festival 2025 with a tour of the world-famous racetrack – which was resurfaced using Mountsorrel’s granite. There are also runner-up prizes of VIP quarry tours and Tarmac merchandise goody bags.

Winning entries will also be featured at local summer events including the Mountsorrel Revival, as well as being displayed on-site at the Quarry.

“Our competition is about helping children connect with their local environment and understand the vital role of minerals in shaping the world around them,” said Joshua Mason, Senior Operations Manager at Tarmac. “Mountsorrel Quarry has been part of this community for generations, and we’re proud to launch an initiative that brings together education, creativity, and community pride.”

Entries must be submitted digitally via the dedicated Mountsorrel Quarry competition webpage. All entries must be accompanied by a parental consent form. Judging will take place in July, with winners announced later that month.
