About

Mountsorrel Quarry

Mountsorrel Quarry is a granite quarry, known for its distinctive pink rock, which is in high demand for some of the country’s biggest construction projects due to its strength and durability. It covers an area of around 500 acres – that’s about 250 football pitches.

Located at the heart of the UK near Loughborough in Leicestershire, the quarry is ideally positioned to send large volumes of stone for construction projects that help to keep the UK thriving.

Our History

Granite quarrying has been at the heart of communities in Charnwood for at least 250 years and has been carried out in many different ways since Roman times. The first known site in Mountsorrel was located at the present-day Castle Hill area in the village.

Quorn house and the Hub

In 2015 we purchased Quorn House and the surrounding 120 acres of parkland, which sits adjacent to the north of the quarry. We have since established an office in the building, which houses around 35 Tarmac employees.

The Hub is the operational nerve centre for our Midlands region. From co-ordinating logistics to managing delivery schedules, the Hub plays a vital role in enabling our operational sites across the region to deliver construction materials when and where they are needed across England.

Strategic Significance

Leicestershire – and Mountsorrel in particular – has a historic quarrying tradition stretching back over 250 years.

The geology of the east of England, London and the southeast means that the crushed aggregates needed to build housing and infrastructure are simply not available. As a result, a group of strategic hard rock quarries within Leicestershire help to make up this shortfall. Leicestershire produces approximately 65% of the igneous crushed rock in England, and Mountsorrel Quarry alone produces nearly a quarter of England’s supply.

Our rail distribution network is the largest in Leicestershire, which allows us to transport our rock efficiently and sustainably to rail depots across the Midlands, East Anglia and the Southeast.
