Tarmac’s Mountsorrel Quarry in Loughborough has donated a large piece of granite to the Loughborough Army Reserve Centre for use as a memorial stone.

Forming part of a remembrance garden created at the centre, where soldiers, veterans and their families can take a moment of peace and reflection, the stone will also be used to lay wreaths at appropriate times of the year.

Speaking of the donation Rob Lees, operations manager at Mountsorrel Quarry, said: “We are extremely proud to have been able to help the army reserve team to create a place of remembrance.

“It is very important to us to support our local communities, especially with projects such as this that mean so much to people.”

Captain Ben Wing, from the Loughborough Army Reserve Centre, said: “We are very grateful to Mountsorrel quarry for the stone and for all their efforts getting it to the centre.

“To have a worthy stone is very much appreciated and hopefully will be there for many years to come.”

The Loughborough-based squadron is part of 158 Regiment RLC. Its headquarters are based in Peterborough, with squadrons across the East Midlands and East Anglia, including Lincoln, Ipswich and Bedford. The regiment provides general transport support to its paired Regular Army Regiment, 7 Regiment RLC in Cottesmore, as well as the wider army.

Last year, the regiment mobilised 50 soldiers to assist at COVID-19 testing sites.
