Tarmac donation smooths the bumps for lawn bowlers at local club

Roll up, roll up… Bowlers in Quorn can enjoy a smooth surface not only on the green on which they compete but also on their new car park thanks to a donation from Tarmac.

Tarmac’s Mountsorrel Quarry donated stone and people power to Quorn Mills Park Bowls Club to help resurface their car park.

Dave Walters, health & safety officer at Quorn Mills Park Bowls Club, said: “We really are grateful to Tarmac for their support. The car park at the club has been much improved and we are grateful to the team at Mountsorrel for their offer to provide the stone and manpower to carry out the improvements.

“The car park, which was becoming a bit of a hazard, is now much easier for members pulling their bowls trolleys from car to club and for those players who are confined to wheelchairs.

“We were thankful that Tarmac also provided help with the heavy lifting to shift the stone. It would have been a lot of material for our members to have to move. I am the youngest member with an average membership age of 71!”

With nearly 100 members, Quorn Mills Park Bowls Club, is looking to appeal to the bowlers of tomorrow and is working closely with local schools and other community groups to encourage more people – including youngsters – to try the sport.

Dave added: “As a registered charity the club is run by the members for the members. We have non-bowling members, social playing members all the way through to County players.

“We are trying to shake the perception that bowls is only for older people and want to get the sport out to a wider audience. It really can be great exercise – I regularly clock up 7,000 steps on my watch. It is not just a sedate pastime. It’s out in the fresh air, gentle exercise and really quite technically challenging.”

Mick Stevens, estates manager at Mountsorrel Quarry, said: “We are grateful to our partners A&V Squires for providing the people power to shift the stone and carry out the heavy work.

“The bowls club is local to us, and we are always keen to help in the community wherever we can.”
